Me dad taught me to do everything you could think of to make the field work to the advantage of your players and against the strengths of the opposing players. In the late 1960s, fans used to call the area in front of home plate in Comiskey “Camp Swamp” because we’d dig it up and soak it with water for our sinkerball pitchers like Hoyt Wilhelm or Tommy John. Bit if a sinkerballer was pitching for the visiting team, we’d mix the dirt with clay and gasoline and burn it to harden the soil.
