I knew this guy who owned a bar in Cape Breton. His family had been in the hospitality business on the Island for years and years. They’d owned a hotel in a little town and made enough to get by. One year, ACOA granted a bunch of money to a politically-connected resident in the same town—to open up a hotel. There wasn’t enough business for two operations. They were both gone in a few years.
Nova Scotia is broke. It lives beyond its means. For example, without transfer payments from other parts of Canada, the province wouldn’t be able to afford a healthcare system.
If you’ve ever wondered how or why big businesses have seemed so eager to jump on the Green bandwagon, look no further:
“In this case, governments are spending almost $70 million to help the second-largest shipbuilding company in the world, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, take over the former TrentonWorks rail car plant.”
These things never end well.
Dan Leger Casts the Latest Stone
Dan Leger, peddlar of photo-shopped images of Halifax’s flooded waterfront, returns. Leading up to the final week of the recent provincial election in Nova Scotia, a story broke about illegal union contributions to the NDP campaign. The Chronicle Herald buried the story on page four and didn’t return to it until after the election. The Herald’s editor returns today to lecture the community about morality in politics:
